Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday to discuss the handover of the 1,600 MW Ultra Super Critical Godda Power Plant in Jharkhand to Bangladesh.
The plant, which is India’s first transnational power project, began supplying power to Bangladesh on April 10, 2023. It is expected to meet about 10% of Bangladesh’s electricity demand.

During his meeting with Hasina, Adani said that the project was a “testament to the strong bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh.” He also expressed his gratitude to the teams from both countries who worked to commission the plant in record time.
Hasina, for her part, said that the project was a “significant milestone” in the relationship between India and Bangladesh. She also said that the plant would help to meet Bangladesh’s growing energy needs.
The meeting between Adani and Hasina comes at a time when India and Bangladesh are looking to expand their cooperation in the energy sector. In recent years, the two countries have signed a number of agreements to import and export electricity.

The Godda power plant is a major step forward in this cooperation. It is the first time that India has exported electricity to Bangladesh on a large scale. The project is also expected to boost economic ties between the two countries.
Adani said that the Adani Group is “committed to working with Bangladesh to meet its growing energy needs.” He said that the company is “looking at other opportunities to invest in the Bangladesh energy sector.”
Hasina welcomed Adani’s commitment and said that Bangladesh is “open to investment from Indian companies.” She said that the government is “committed to creating a favorable investment climate for foreign investors.”
The meeting between Adani and Hasina is a sign of the growing economic and energy cooperation between India and Bangladesh. The Godda power plant is a major milestone in this cooperation and is expected to have a positive impact on both countries.
