Chandigarh “Diesel Paratha” Video Goes Viral: Misconstrued Humor or Health Risk?

A video sparking outrage on social media depicted a scene from a dhaba (roadside eatery) in Chandigarh, India, where parathas, a popular flatbread, were supposedly being cooked in diesel. The video, uploaded by food blogger Amanpreet Singh, showed him interacting with the dhaba owner Channi Singh, who seemingly pours “diesel” onto a sizzling paratha on a griddle.

Diesel Paratha Viral video

Titled “Diesel Paratha – You Won’t Believe This!”, the video quickly went viral, with viewers expressing disgust and worries about hygiene and public health. The outrage reached authorities, prompting the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take notice and launch an investigation into the dhaba.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the dhaba owner, Channi Singh, strongly refuted the claims. He maintained that the video was a misunderstanding and a misguided attempt at humor. Singh clarified that the liquid used was regular cooking oil, emphasizing that their establishment strictly adheres to using safe and edible oils for cooking.

Following the backlash, Amanpreet Singh issued an apology and deleted the video. He admitted that the intent was to create humorous content but conceded it backfired due to the misleading narrative and its potential to cause harm to the dhaba’s reputation.
