Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1861-1962), popularly known as Sir MV, was an Indian civil engineer, administrator, and statesman. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost civil engineers of India and his birthday, September 15, is celebrated as Engineers Day in India, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. He is also often referred to as “the maker of modern Mysore”.

Visvesvaraya was born in Muddenahalli, a village in the Kolar district of Karnataka, India. He lost his father at a young age and had to work hard to support his family. He studied at the College of Engineering, Pune, and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1883.
After graduating, Visvesvaraya worked as a civil engineer for the government of British India. He worked on a number of important projects, including the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Mysore and the flood protection system for Hyderabad. He also played a key role in the development of the Indian irrigation system.

In 1912, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was appointed as the Diwan of Mysore. He served in this position for six years and during this time, he oversaw a number of major developments in the state. He established new industries, built roads and railways, and improved education and healthcare facilities. He also introduced a number of social reforms, such as the abolition of child marriage and the promotion of widow remarriage.
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was a visionary leader who believed in the power of science and technology to improve the lives of people. He was also a strong advocate for social justice and equality. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the development of modern India.
