Narendra Modi, the 14th and current Prime Minister of India, turns 73 on September 17, 2023. He is the first prime minister to be born after India’s independence in 1947.

Modi was born in Vadnagar, a small town in Gujarat, to a poor family. He sold tea on railway platforms as a child to help support his family. He later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization.
Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001
In 1987, Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the political wing of the RSS. He quickly rose through the ranks of the party and became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.
As Chief Minister, Modi oversaw a period of rapid economic growth in Gujarat. He also implemented a number of social welfare programs, such as the Kanya Kelavani Yojana, which provided financial assistance to girls from poor families to attend school.
