Shaheed Udham Singh Shaheedi Divas is a public holiday in India that is observed on July 31 every year. It is a day to commemorate the death of Shaheed Udham Singh, a Sikh freedom fighter who was executed by the British government in 1940 for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.

Udham Singh was born in Sunam, Punjab, in 1899. He grew up in a poor family and was forced to work at a young age. He was exposed to the British colonial rule and the discrimination that Sikhs faced under British rule. This led him to become a freedom fighter.

In 1919, Udham Singh witnessed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, in which British troops opened fire on a peaceful gathering of unarmed protesters, killing over 1,000 people. This event had a profound impact on Udham Singh and he vowed to avenge the deaths of the victims.

In 1940, Udham Singh traveled to London, England, where he assassinated Michael O’Dwyer. O’Dwyer was the British official who had ordered the firing on the protesters at Jallianwala Bagh. Udham Singh was arrested and charged with murder. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was hanged in July 1940.
