Mark Margolis, the character actor best known for playing the wheelchair-bound, bell-ringing drug lord Hector Salamanca on the AMC series Breaking Bad, has died. He was 83.

Mark Margolis’ son, Morgan Margolis, confirmed his father’s death to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday. He said Mark Margolis died in Mount Sinai Hospital in New York after a short illness.
Mark Margolis was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1939. He began his acting career in the 1970s, appearing in films such as Going in Style and Dressed to Kill. He also had recurring roles on television shows such as The Equalizer, Quantum Leap, and Oz.
But it was his role as Hector Salamanca on Breaking Bad that made him a household name. Salamanca was a ruthless drug lord who was rendered speechless after suffering a stroke. He communicated by ringing a bell, which became one of the show’s most iconic sound effects.

Mark Margolis’ performance as Salamanca was praised by critics and fans alike. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2012.
Margolis continued to work after Breaking Bad, appearing in films such as Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and Noah. He also had recurring roles on television shows such as Better Call Saul, Your Honor, and The Affair.

Mark Margolis is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline, and their son, Morgan.
In a statement, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan said, “Mark Margolis was a wonderful actor and a wonderful man. He will be deeply missed.”
Margolis’ death is a major loss for the entertainment industry. He was a talented actor who brought a unique intensity and charisma to every role he played.
