On Friday morning, it was reported that India’s top cricket player, Shubman Gill, might not be able to play in the first World Cup game against Australia on Sunday because he’s sick. Gill has been playing really well in one-day cricket this year, scoring 1,230 runs in 20 games with an average of 72.35.

The team is keeping a close watch on him as they prepare to start the tournament in Chennai. Whether he can play in the important match depends on how quickly he recovers from what’s reported to be dengue fever.
India is going to play against Australia in their first match on Sunday, and two days before the match, head coach Rahul Dravid gave an update on Gill’s health. Dravid didn’t say for sure if Gill will play against Australia, but he also didn’t say that Gill won’t play.

“He’s certainly feeling better today,” Dravid said during a press conference.

“The medical team is monitoring on daily basis. We have 36 hours, we’ll see what decision they take. He’s certainly feeling better today.”
When pressed further, Dravid stated that Gill will continued to be monitored. “Medical team hasn’t ruled him out as yet.
“We’ll keep monitoring him on a day to day basis. We’ll see how he feels day after tomorrow,” Dravid said.
Shubman Gill has been one of the top performers for India in the fifty-over format this year. He scored the most runs for the team, and he was also the top scorer in the Asia Cup last month, where he made 302 runs in six games and hit a century and two fifties.
What if Shubman Gill can’t play?
If Gill can’t play on Sunday, they might put Ishan Kishan at the start of the batting lineup, and he would open the Indian innings with Rohit Sharma.
